An Original Selwyn College Presentation Oar (SOLD)

A wonderfully detailed & very decorative presentation oar adorned with gilt calligraphy & Selwyn College insignia. Any crew which records four consecutive bumps is said to have ‘gained their oars’. The prize being a full-size oar decorated with the names of the full crew in gold lettering on the college colours for each rower. The COX is given a decorated rudder and the coach receives a decorated wooden shield with a mock-up of the bow end of a boat. C1968

Selwyn College, Cambridge was named for Bishop George Augustus Selwyn, who was himself a Cambridge scholar and a rower for St John’s College, Cambridge St John’s College, Cambridge. Selwyn is the only College to be named after a scholar who was also a Rowing Blue. George Selwyn was a member of the Cambridge crew which competed in the inaugural Boat Race in 1829.

This Oar is in superb condition, only a few chips along the edge, but it is nice to find one intact, it would makes a super decorative piece.
