Art Deco
Clubhouse Interiors have a beautiful collection of items that originate from the Art Deco design movement. The Art Deco style originated in Paris, but has influenced architecture and popular culture as a whole. This important shift in design changed the world. Art Deco and its minimalist sister, the Berlin-born Bauhaus movement, can be seen in architectural examples across Europe, Tel Aviv, Australia, New York and even Miami.
Our West Sussex showroom is calling out for visitors to admire their collection of Art Deco products in the flesh, honing in on vivid, history-rich imaginations with enthusiasm for all things interesting and eye catching. Clubhouse Interiors know that these more aged, rare – often unique – items also carry an extra layer of appeal in that they are a worthwhile monetary investments , either as a family keepsake or heirloom. Our team will boast knowledge on any craftsmanship and manufacturing processes of sought-after and popular Art Deco pieces.
The Art Deco style is particularly popular at Clubhouse Interiors. The style compliments the modern lines found in present day designs, adorning the more functional yet chic, design conscious and low-cost stores of Ikea or Habitat. These pieces, with their heavy, sometimes metallic, polished wood, straight and minimalist lines, and the simple but mesmerising geometric interpretations of flora, fauna and the natural human form can work incredibly well and compliment the style of most modern homes. The Berlin movement of Bauhaus appeared in parallel to the Deco period, from 1919-1933, with the Nazis closing the Bauhaus school in Berlin due their alleged communist links. Bauhaus was in all senses, more practical in form, with emphasis on simplicity and function paving the way for the plastic revolution and modernist times ahead.
The art of interior design is becoming increasingly popular amongst millennials when adorning the first-footed rungs of their increasingly elusive housing ladders, but they too seem to have fallen madly in love with decadent one-offs, learning a little about the design movements of the early 20th century along the way. The fascinating showroom of Clubhouse Interiors is brimming full of elegantly designed furniture, collectable items, bone and marble accessories made between the turn of the last century and 1940.
While the antique definition may still apply to items made before 1916, the fantastic range made over the Art Deco period fuses a huge pastiche of styles, yet, the instant streamlined shapes and curvature of Art Deco is instantly recognisable. The beauty of this worldwide art movement cannot be disputed, touching everything from architecture, art and graphic design, colour-rich advertising posters, furniture, and stand alone ornaments, sculptures and even jewellery.
The Art Deco design movement shaped, both figuratively and literally, the beginnings of modern design for the rest of the century, drawing inspiration from both cubism and futurism, while experimenting with the simplification of frilly Victorian ornamentation. The Art Deco movement could be seen on both sides of the Atlantic – and in two halves – with the first world war and great depression occurring smack bang in the middle of this era. After these testing times the materials were altered to reflect the shift in mood. Early Art Deco sourced rare, extravagant materials such as ebony and bone, mirrored glass and shiny, sleek metals, while the latter half was rolled out to the masses, using similar shapes and streamlining – this time using early plastics and concrete finishes.
