A Superb Antique Steel Judges Robe Box, made from steel by the world famous Ede & Ravencroft of London, makers of high end Legal gowns, robes and steel gown boxes, this box was owned by “The Right Honourable Sir Matthew Ingle Joyce” the box has the Judge’s name engraved on a brass plate on the front and has the makers name is printed on the inside of the box. Sir Matthew Ingle Joyce was a British judge. He was a Justice of the Chancery Division of the High Court between 1900 and 1915. Born in Breedon on the Hill, Leicestershire, he was educated at Ashby-de-la-Zouch Grammar School and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he graduated eighth wrangler in 1862.
Ede & Ravenscroft Est 1689, are the oldest tailors in London, established in 1689. They have two London premises, in Chancery Lane and Burlington Gardens, very close to the famous Savile Row. They make, sell and hire out legal gowns and wigs, clerical dress, civic and municipal robes, academic dress and other ceremonial and formal dress.
The main (and historic) outlet and offices are at 93 Chancery Lane which, due to its proximity to the Inns Of Court and the country’s main civil and criminal law courts, is also the company’s main outlet for legal dress.
This lovely piece of Law Court History, would make a great addition to any collector or as a piece of interest, a really lovely thing.
