A superb and very rare set of ‘Maxwell of London” hand made spurs, made from brass, displayed on a James Shoolbred hand made Mahogany stand. Comprising of 6 sets of box spurs, the central set being a pair of Officers Dress Spurs, this set is of extremely high quality, the spurs have the makers name ‘Maxwell’ Piccadilly stamped on the front and sides and have left & right to indicate they are a complete set. Henry Maxwell of London, a spur-making firm founded in 1750 that expanded into other horse gear, exhibited at the 1851 Great Exhibition, and is credited by some with invention of the box spur in the very early 1800s.
The display stand was made by James Shoolbred & Co, J which is stamped on the base, J. Shoolbred is famous for manufacturing and selling its own high quality antique furniture and shop displays in their thriving and fashionable furniture shop.
This set would make a fantastic addition for any collector or as a lovely display piece, a real rare set to find still complete and with the original display stand.
