Victorian Silver Plated Nautilus Shell Spoon Warmer (SOLD)

A Fabulous English Victorian silver plated nautilus shell shaped spoon warmer which sits on a rocky base with a clam shell handle, comes complete with serving spoon. Circa 1868

At a time when the kitchens were generally set far from dining rooms, it was of great importance that food be kept warm while being brought to the rarely heated dining rooms. Apart from the large variety of dishes that had hot water compartments so the enchanting spoon warmers were invented. Filled also with hot water in the kitchen, they were brought to the table along with the serving spoon(s) which were stored in them until being used and so kept warm.

All Hallows Church, Higher Kea in Cornwall, was opened in 1802 but its design proved unpopular and soon cracks began to appear and by 1869 it was clear it would have to be rebuilt. After a fund raising campaign, the new church was consecrated in 1894.

A really lovely piece of Victorian Kitchenalia, this piece was given as a wedding gift, inscription on the front of this piece, presented to Miss Daubuz on the occasion of her wedding in 1868 by the Parishioners of the Higher St Kea.
