A superb Teak storage barrel. Made from Teak with brass hoop banding and brass fittings, the lid is a hinged half split lid with a lockable latch. C1880
Storage of food was a major problem onboard ships – there were no refrigerators , food and drink was stored in the hold in large barrels or casks, before refrigeration became common food had to be preserved using salt, containers such as this pork/beef cask were half filled with water, salt and saltpetre to keep the meat fresh. Other forms of preservation could include smoking and pickling, but these would usually be done ashore and the preserved provisions then taken aboard ship.
This Barrel is in original condition, would make a beautiful side table or used for storage.
